Design A Flyer for Winterfest

Worth 50 points

Assignment:  You are to design an informational flyer advertising Winterfest 2005.

What exactly is Winterfest, you say?  Well, its a winter carnival that is sponsored annually by the Nicholas County Elementary and Middle School (NCEMS).  It will be held on December 2nd, 2005  from 6:00 -8:30 pm.  4-H will be serving chili at 6:00 pm. The teachers will sponsor about 17 different games for attendees to play.  The games will not start until 6:30 though.  Bingo will also be available to anyone wishing to play. The homemakers will have a cake walk and two homerooms are each going to sponsor a basket of goodies for silent auction.

In designing your logo for Winterfest, I would strongly suggest that you review the Powerpoint on what the rules are for good logo design.  Click here to check it out.  After doing that you should try and brainstorm as many different ideas as you can relating to winter-themes (i.e., snowmen, ice, snowflakes, etc.) to help you illustrate the logo. Don't go with your first idea, because first ideas are usually lame.  Use your first ideas as a springboard to work toward better design.   Think about how color could be used effectively in giving the viewer a feeling of wintertime.

IMPORTANT: On November 17th, we will have a class critique of each person's initial logo design at the beginning of class in the computer lab.  (We will be looking at just the logo itself, not the entire flyer) You will need to have printed out a black and white copy of what you have created and placed on the lab table for everyone to see. Each person will review the logos and make a written evaluation about each logo commenting on its strengths and areas needed for improvement.  (this critique is also a separate grade from the completed flyer project)  The logo design itself is a separate file that will need to be inserted into your flyer, so in essence you will be creating two works for this particular assignment.

After the critique you will go back, read through all of the comments, and re-work the initial design by taking into consideration the critique information provided by your peers and the teacher.  The final draft of your flyer is due on November 18th at the end of class.

As usual, you will need to save the final copy of your work in the Computer Art 2005 folder under the finished work file marked "Winterfest". There will be two folders inside of this one.  One will be marked "Winterfest Logo" (you will place just your logo design in there) and the other will be "Winterfest Flyer" (you will put the entire flyer file that includes the logo there).

Project Requirements:
  • Document size for flyer: 8 x 10 inches
  • Resolution: 72 dpi
  • Information that must be on the flyer: Date, Time, Location, Winterfest logo, and events (as mentioned above)
  • No errors in grammar/spelling
  • Contains an original logo image design for "Winterfest"  (Absolutely NO cutting and pasting anything from a previous source to help you create your logo)  Every part of your logo must be created by your own hand.
