Art 1 Artist Reflection Writing:  Arcimboldo-Style Portrait

 

Please use complete sentences, correct grammar, and punctuation in your writing.  Length of writing should be a minimum of two pages.

SECTION 1:  DESCRIPTION

  1. Describe what you were supposed to do for this project.  What were the major objectives behind the assignment?
  2. Discuss the process you went through in coming up with your initial idea for the composition.  Were there changes that needed to be made from the beginning sketch to the overall finished work?  If so, what were they? 
  3. Discuss the overall appearance of your work.  Identify all of the objects you have included in the portrait and where are they located?
  4. Discuss your choice of media.  Which media did you decide to use for the project and why?

SECTION 2:  ANALYSIS

  1. Analyze the work according to HOW you used of FOUR elements of art and FOUR principles of design. 

ELEMENTS OF ART

1.       Line (identify: horizontal, diagonal, curved, vertical, zig-zag)                      

2.       Color (identify: specific colors used/color schemes)

3.       Shape (identify: organic, geometric)

4.       Space (identify: positive/negative space)

5.       Value (identify: light/dark areas)

6.       Texture  (identify portions of the work that try to simulate textures in real life)

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

1.       Balance (identify: symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial)  Which element of art did you use to create that type of balance?

2.       Rhythm  (identify what/which elements are repeated with changes)  Which element did you repeat in the work and how does it change?

3.       Emphasis (identify what part of the composition stands out the most?  Where is your focal point?  Which element of art did you use to create the focal point?)

4.       Movement (Identify which element of art you used to create a feeling of visual movement in the work and explain how the viewer’s eye should travel through the piece.)

5.       Harmony (identify which elements of art you used to create a feeling of harmony)

6.       Unity (identify which elements of art you used to create a feeling of unity or oneness about the work.)

SECTION 3:  INTERPRETATION

  1. Interpret your work for the viewer.  Discuss reasons behind the significance of the objects that you included in your portrait.  (In what way do they represent you or reveal something about you?)  Discuss your use of creating a mood, feeling or emotion in the work.  How do you think a viewer will react to your finished piece?  What do you want them to better understand about you after looking at your work?

SECTION 4:  JUDGMENT

G. Judge your work according to several factors:

1. Craftsmanship (your ability to handle your choice of media as well as you use of the elements/principles of art)

•         Novice- (D)  Novice understanding and application of artistic qualities:  line, color, texture, and balance in the use of materials. Work is crude and unrefined.

•         Apprentice (C)  Improved understanding and application of artistic qualities:  line, color, texture, and balance in the use of materials.  Little attention to details.

•         Proficient (B)  Competent understanding and application of artistic qualities: line, color, texture and balance in the use of materials.  Adequate attention to detail.

•         High Proficient (B+)  Excellent understanding and application of artistic qualities:  line, color, texture, and balance in the use of materials.  Good attention to detail.

•         Distinguished (A) Refined and sophisticated understanding and application of artistic qualities:  line, color, texture, and balance in the use of materials.  Extreme attention to detail.

 

2. Creativity (your degree of risk-taking, originality of thought, and self-expression)

 

•         Novice (D)  Novice and restricted approach to developing the idea (student work based on first idea without development) with no evidence of risk taking.

•         Apprentice (C)  Improved thinking and expression in development of creative idea, but with limited risk taking.

•         Proficient (B)  Competent development in expression of creative idea with increased attempt at risk taking.

•         High Proficient (B+) Excellent approach to original thinking and expression, with evidence of risk taking.

•         Distinguished (A) Refined and sophisticated approach and original and unique expression with a high degree of risk taking.
