A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Visual Art 1

Open to grades 9-12

1 credit

 

 This course is designed for students who are interested in exploring and creating works of art using a variety of media and processes. Visual Art 1 is an introductory high school art class in which students learn the basic applications of the elements and principles of art. The student will explore the basics of visual art, including creative thinking, the elements and principles of design, art criticism, color theory, basic drawing, and sculpting techniques. Students will also learn how art is an integral part of their visual world, both past and present. They will be able to apply personal and real world experiences to their knowledge of art as well as production of it. Students will develop proficiency and skill with art techniques through production, use of varied media, related vocabulary, synthesis of ideas, personal expression, creativity, improved problem solving, organizational, and time management skills. The class will incorporate lessons in art production, art history, art criticism, aesthetics, experimentation, self-assessment, collaborative learning, cultural diversity and visual culture.

 

 Students are expected to provide basic media supplies. Students will be required to participate in all classroom activities which will include weekly sketchbook assignments, creating numerous two and three dimensional art forms, and analyze and critique their own and others art works in order to earn credit for this course.

 

B. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

As with all visual arts courses at NCHS, this class is primarily a studio class. It is varied in its forms of instruction and will be delivered in the following ways:

lecture, lecture/demonstration, group discussion, studio production.  Students will also be involved in research activities, presentations, and art analysis.

 

C. COURSE OBJECTIVES -

Objective 1- Students will learn about the basic elements and principles of art and how to incorporate them in their work.

Objective 2- Students will apply conceptual knowledge of the elements and principles while making works of art.

Objective 3-  Students will express their personal feelings and ideas.

Objective 4- Students will produce works of art with their own hands using art techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting 3 dimensional art, digital art, mixed media and printmaking.

Objective 5- Students will make connections between art and their visual culture while expanding their base of culture, knowledge and experience.

Objective 6-  Students will participate in reading and writing activities related to art, artists, art periods, art history and the making of art.        

Objective 7-  Students will have an opportunity to learn about possible careers in art related and creative areas.

Objective 8 -  Students will demonstrate performance-based competency in technology.

E. TEXTBOOK(S) AND REQUIRED TOOLS OR SUPPLIES

Textbook: The Visual Experience, Jack Hobbs & Richard Salome

Required supplies and/or tools needed for this course:

  • 9 x 12” sketchbook
  • drawing pencils  (can be purchased from Wal-Mart in craft section)
  • 1 white or pink eraser
  • 2 pieces of posterboard (for art portfolio)

·          A folder notebook  for daily journal/bellringer activities

·          A set of Crayola colored pencils (24 pack)

 

F. GRADING PLAN

  • The grading scale that will be used each school year to report student progress for Nicholas County High School is as follows:
  • A = 100-90
  • B = 89-80
  • C = 79-70
  • D = 69-60
  • F = Below 60
  • I = Incomplete

 

  • The weighting of course components:

·        Participation: 10%

·        Homework/Class Assessments: 35%

·        Tests & Quizzes: 15%

·        Mid-Term Exam: 20%

·        Final Exam: 20%

 

Students should anticipate assignments that include working with a variety of two and three dimensional art materials such as graphite, charcoal, painting, ceramic, watercolor, computer graphics etc.,. Assessment for each studio project assigned will include the following areas of evaluation in the grading rubric:

  • Craftsmanship

·        Composition/Design

  • Technique
  • Creativity
  • Personal Expression
  • Written Critique
  • Daily Productivity

 

G. COURSE COMPONENT SPECIFICS

Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism or cheating in any form is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Student work that is suspect to cheating or plagiarism will receive a zero (0) for a grade.

 

Late Assignments: Assignments, such as studio projects, not turned in on due date can receive up to a 20 point deduction from the achieved grade, unless excused absence is noted. Failure to complete bellringer/journal log/exit activities within the allotted class time will result in a zero for that day’s assignment.

 

Make-up Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor to make up work.  All missed work must be made up within 3 days of returning to school unless the student has missed more than 3 days of school.  In the event that a student has missed more than 3 days of school, the student will receive the same number of days missed to make up the work.  Only make up work that is due to an excused absence will be graded.

 

Class time may not be used to catch up on missed work. Any quizzes or exams missed must be made up either before the start of school or after the school day.

 

Extra Credit: Extra credit points may be made available for students who want to improve their grades per the instructor’s discretion.  Students should discuss extra credit opportunities with the teacher outside of class and have these approved ahead of time.

 

Changes: The information contained in this course syllabus is subject to change without notice.   Specific dates for when assignments are to be completed will be announced by the instructor later as the course progresses. 

 

 

H. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT

  • All rules contained in the NCHS Code of Student Conduct will be followed.
  • No food or drinks allowed in the art room at any time.
  • Be on time to class.  Door will be locked when the tardy bell rings.
  • Arrive to class with all materials needed and be ready to work when class begins.
  • Do not go back into storage room & sink areas unless authorized to do so.
  • Remain in your assigned seat until you are dismissed from class.
  • Respect other people’s property.
  • Be courteous to peers and teacher alike.

 

 

 

 

I.  CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

 All students are required to exhibit the highest caliber of behavior and diligence in their work. Respect given to teacher, peers, and self is paramount. Talking and non art-related discussions shall be kept to a minimum.  Horseplay, off-task behavior, sleeping, and tardiness are not tolerated. Electronic devices for personal communication, music and/or entertainment are not allowed to be used in the classroom at any time. Attendance is mandatory due to the nature of a studio class. Daily reading and writing is required.

 

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS CLASS

  • Come prepared with all materials needed

·        Pay attention – follow directions

·        Complete all assignment deadlines on time.

  • Complete homework/all assignments/projects well
  • Study your work, notes, handouts, etc.
  • Keep up with all papers, quizzes, tests in your notebook
  • Participate positively in class activities
  • Read your textbook assignments.
