DESCRIPTION
VISUAL ART II-
Prerequisite: Visual Art I
This course is for
students who want an opportunity to advance to a higher level of
understanding and skill development in the two-dimensional and
three-dimensional areas. Art II builds
upon the skills and knowledge learned in Art 1. Stronger emphasis is placed on composition
and the creation of original artworks for portfolios. The general areas of study included in this
course are a focus on art history, recognizing works and artists from
different periods of art history and world cultures. Students will be
expected to express their ideas in a variety of styles and methods. Students
will be required to participate in class discussion, discuss works of art,
critique a formal work of art, study styles of art through slides and videos,
and create projects that illustrate these styles in order to earn credit for
this course.
VISUAL ART
III-
Prerequisite: Visual Art II and teacher approval
Course Description:
This course is designed for students who show strong interest and
talent in visual art. Students are
expected to present their own personal point of view while creating unique
works for portfolios and exhibitions.
Students are required to maintain a working sketchbook/journal in addition
to their class work. Students will enter their work in competitions and
exhibitions.
Individualized studies of special interest are
encouraged. Students will be required
to recognize works and artists from different periods and styles, communicate
ideas about works of art through writing and speaking, submit a writing piece
suitable for inclusion in their writing portfolio, study styles of art
through slides and videos, and create projects that illustrate these styles
in order to earn credit for this course. Students from this class may be
combined with the students in Visual Arts II.
VISUAL ART
IV-
Prerequisite:
Visual Art III and teacher approval
This course is for students who are highly
motivated and have a desire to do college level work. Course work is designed around those
students who are planning a career in the visual art field. Students will concentrate their efforts on
developing an art portfolio, which will include 20 quality works of art per
semester in various media around a common theme. Students must also submit a
writing piece for their writing portfolio and complete research studies in
order to earn credit for this course.
A slide portfolio of 30-40 slides showing the student’s work is
required for the final evaluation at the end of the course.
B. METHOD OF
INSTRUCTION
As with all visual
arts courses at NCHS, this class is primarily a studio class. It is
varied in its forms of instruction and will be delivered in the following
ways:
lecture, lecture/demonstration,
group discussion, studio production.
Students will also be involved in research activities, presentations,
and art analysis.
C. COURSE
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1-
Students will apply the
elements and principles of art and incorporate them in their work in sophisticated and
highly creative ways.
Objective 2- Students will apply conceptual knowledge of the elements and
principles while making works of art.
Objective 3- Students will express their personal feelings and ideas.
Objective 4- Students will produce works of art with their own hands using
art techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting 3 dimensional art,
digital art, mixed media and printmaking.
Objective 5- Students will make connections between art and their visual
culture while expanding their base of culture, knowledge and experience.
Objective 6- Students will participate in reading and
writing activities related to art, artists, art periods, art history and the
making of art.
Objective 7- Students will have an opportunity to
learn about possible careers in art related and creative areas.
Objective 8 - Students will demonstrate performance-based competency in technology.
D. COURSE TOPICS/UNITS
Since this is a
mixed class with of art students who are working toward developing a
portfolio of work, students will be creating individual projects for the
duration of the semester. Various media are explored in depth in this
course such as painting, jewelry, printing, textiles, digital art, drawing,
and ceramics. Discussion of other artists and periods in the form of art
appreciation.
E. TEXTBOOK(S) AND REQUIRED TOOLS OR SUPPLIES
Textbook: There is
no required textbook for this course.
Required supplies and/or tools needed for this course:
- 9 x
12” sketchbook
- drawing
pencils (can be purchased from Wal-Mart
in craft section)
- 1
white or pink eraser
- composition
notebook for journal/bellringer activities
- A set of Crayola
colored pencils (24 pack)
* Art IV students will complete a portfolio of 20 art works by
the end of the year.

- The
grading scale that will be used each school year to report student
progress for Nicholas County
High School is as follows:

Students should anticipate assignments that include
working with a variety of two and three dimensional art materials such as graphite,
charcoal, painting, ceramic, watercolor, computer graphics etc.,. Assessment
for each studio project assigned will include the following areas of
evaluation in the grading rubric:

G. COURSE COMPONENT
SPECIFICS
Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism or cheating in any
form is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Student work that
is suspect to cheating or plagiarism will receive a zero (0) for a grade.
Late
Assignments: Assignments,
such as studio projects, not turned in on due date can receive up to a 20
point deduction from the achieved grade, unless excused absence is
noted. Failure to complete bellringer/journal
log/exit activities within the allotted class time will result in a zero for
that day’s assignment.
Make-up
Policy: It is
the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor
to make up work. All missed work must be
made up within 3 days of returning to school unless the student has missed
more than 3 days of school. In the
event that a student has missed more than 3 days of school, the student will
receive the same number of days missed to make up the work. Only make up work that is due to an excused
absence will be graded.
Class
time may not be used to catch up on missed work. Any quizzes or exams missed
must be made up either before the start of school or after the school day.
Extra
Credit: Extra credit
points may be made available for students who want to improve their grades
per the instructor’s discretion.
Students should discuss extra credit opportunities with the teacher
outside of class and have these approved ahead of time.
Changes: The information contained in this course
syllabus is subject to change without notice. Specific dates for when assignments are to
be completed will be announced by the instructor later as the course
progresses.
H. CLASSROOM RULES
OF CONDUCT
- All
rules contained in the NCHS Code of Student Conduct will be followed.
- No
food or drinks allowed in the art room at any time.
- Be on time to class. Door will be locked when the tardy
bell rings.
- Arrive to class with all materials
needed and be ready to work when class begins.
- Do not go back into storage room
& sink areas unless authorized to do so.
- Remain in your assigned seat until
you are dismissed from class.
- Respect other people’s property.
- Be courteous to peers and teacher
alike.
I. CLASSROOM
EXPECTATIONS
All students are required to
exhibit the highest caliber of behavior and diligence in their work. Respect
given to teacher, peers, and self is paramount. Talking and non art-related
discussions shall be kept to a minimum.
Horseplay, off-task behavior, sleeping, and tardiness are not
tolerated. Electronic devices for personal communication, music and/or
entertainment are not allowed to be used in the classroom at any time.
Attendance is mandatory due to the nature of a studio class. Daily reading
and writing is required and will be in the form of bellringers/exit
activities related to art analysis, vocabulary, or techniques.
